A Common Question

A new question has emerged in my life. It has come from many of the people I’ve met in the past few weeks as they try to figure me out. I haven’t heard it very often before now, and I’m not quite sure why I’m hearing it now, but I’m intrigued.

Do you have kids?

The woman whose child I babysat, the coworker with four kids of her own, and the woman whose child I am tutoring.

No. No kids.

I would more expect questions about whether or not I’m married, how old I am, where I went to college, where I’ve lived…but no. None of those.

Do you have kids.
No. No kids.

Do you want kids?
No. Just my nephew, who is adorable. And my cat, who is soft and sweet.
