Topic #207:

Would you ever get a tattoo? If you had one, what made you decide to get your first? If you don’t have one, why or why not would you ever consider getting one?

Response

Many of my friends have gotten tattoos in the past few years, as had many of my students last year. I’ve seen names, shapes, faces, and religious symbols. Verses, quotes, numbers, and flowers. Large and small, and in all different parts of the body, but I think that my body will remain tattoo free.  Sure, it’s a conversation starter, a way to show someone who you are without even having to open your mouth. Knowing that I don’t like to talk about myself, you’d think I might like this, but I’d rather prefer to maintain a blank canvas, where people have to talk to me in order to get to know me. Part of me would be afraid to commit to something so obvious. I would worry about it defining me, or of others attempting to use it to define me when it shouldn’t. I think that tattoos can be very beautiful and artistic, and I admire people who use them to share something in their life that they are deeply passionate about, but for me, I am going to leave my skin clear, and let my voice do the talking.
